Working Group 1 (WG 1) fosters a fit-for-purpose, continually improving state of the art ocean observing system co-designed by users and developers as a key component of Digital Twins of the Ocean. By enabling a positive feedback loop – where digital twin insights help optimise observing networks, and those networks, in turn, enhance the twins – the group also explores opportunities for joint activities, coordinated testing, optimal decision making and international pilot projects to develop solutions and accelerate global progress in ocean digital twins.
Collaborating with national and regional partners, WG 1 aims to identify gaps in ocean observing, data sharing, model-observations effective integration-sensor fusion, data assimilation, etc.-, and establish strategies to address them, standardize data formats and best practices using consistent quality-control procedures, and ensure that observation systems, modelling and data communities are closely aligned and respond to well defined common goals. This WG further establishes links with sectors such as coastal resilience, offshore energy, shipping, mariculture, and tourism, and promotes citizen science to broaden access to relevant ocean data.
